Origins
Although Amethyst is one of the most “common” stones, meaning that it is found in abundance in many places, it is most “uncommon” in its multitude of forms, its immense usefulness, beauty and the universal love that people have for this purple stone. It is so versatile that it is called the “All Healer” that is good for just about everything! Known since pre-historic times (Neolithic, Ancient Greece and Egypt, named in the Bible) it is found in the United States, South America, Canada, Mexico, Africa, India and Britain. Each locale produces its own unique form and color. Amethyst belongs to the Quartz Mineral Family and is considered a hard and durable stone.

Metaphysical Attributes
Whether in the form of a large geode or a humble point, Amethyst will be most welcome on an altar, near the bedroom or office, worn as jewelry or in a place of high honor…wherever great calming, positive, protecting and healing energy is needed. Amethyst is a Gift to the World and will bring immense blessings to all who see it. It has been called “The Violet Flame” of spiritual purification, removing negative karmic debris, negative influences and energies, providing a shield of Light around the aura.
Amethyst must be the Supreme Crystal of All, as it is well known for bringing healing, calming and meditative states as well as transitioning those traveling from human to spirit form, through the veil of death. Amethyst is the nurturer, reliever of pain, silent joy of meditation and prayer, the therapist for addictions and psychosis, protector of the spirit and mental body against negative energies and more. No wonder Amethyst is so loved and beloved!

It is a natural tranquilizer for cooling down the mind and emotions and alleviating a multitude of physical, mental and emotional imbalances. Overall it is a healer beyond measure for practically everything (except lethargy and all symptoms relating to a lack of energy). This is because it tends to balance and quiet rather than uplift or energize. Amethyst is particularly well known to treat addictions on all levels and it provides a protective shield around the aura against psychic attack or negativity. Many people who are going thru a 12 Step Recovery process for addiction (smoking, alcohol, drug use, gambling, overindulgence, other “bad habits”) use Amethyst as their primary amulet. The word Amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethustos” which means “not drunk” as it was believed to prevent intoxication.

If there is only one crystal in a “first aid kit” that should be Amethyst. As examples:

Physical Healing: Swelling, bruising, injuries, inflammations, insect bites. All organs of elimination, metabolism and the immune system. Headaches, migraines, hearing, lungs, respiratory tract; skin conditions.

Emotional/Mental: Very helpful in reducing rage, anger, tension, anxiety, panic attacks, nightmares. In the case of depression or sadness, Amethyst is known to balance the highs and lows and help one to become more centered even in the midst of grief or loss. One of the very best remedies for insomnia (place on forehead). Improves mental functioning, focus, concentration, decision making, memory and motivation.

Complementary Crystals: Amethyst is a key in most healing grids. It can be added successfully to lower chakra stones (yellow, gold, red, orange, brown, black and dark earthtones) but realize that it can cool or calm down their influences. Place amethyst on or near the area that you want it to specifically impact rather than touch it to the other stones.
